Before installing a patio, pavilion, pergola, fence, fire pit, pool, irrigation system or other outdoor improvement, South Barrington property owners should confirm the Village’s current building, zoning, engineering and architectural requirements.

Does Your South Barrington Project Require a Permit?

The Village of South Barrington requires building permits for many residential construction and property-improvement projects. The Village publishes separate applications, addenda and project-specific construction guidelines to help homeowners and contractors prepare complete submittals.

Requirements may depend on the project’s size, location, structural design, utility connections, drainage impact and relationship to septic systems, property lines, easements, trees and neighboring properties.

Submit the permit package to Village Hall: South Barrington’s application page instructs applicants to submit building-permit applications in person at Village Hall. Contact the Building and Zoning Officer before beginning if you are uncertain whether the proposed work requires approval.

Trees located in the Village right-of-way are Village property. Removal or replacement of a right-of-way tree requires Village permission and a tree-removal application.

Projects near ponds, lakes or shorelines may also require shoreline-restoration review, erosion-control measures or engineering approval.

Property owners should identify private utilities, septic components, drainage systems and tree-protection areas before excavation begins.
